Long Way Round

This is it. The DVD of the TV documentary that greatly helped fan the flames of my motorcycle passion. These 7 episodes capture the essence of planning, preparing and traveling on a bike to parts unknown. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, though accomplished actors, are actually just a couple of guys who really love motorcycling.

They faced towering situations that go far beyond what few could envision themselves accomplishing on a motorcycle---crossing swift-running streams and rivers, rickety bridges, traversing the desolate tundra of sparsely-populated countries, tire-sucking swampy terrain, and near impassible "roads". They were waist-deep in frenzied back-country waters and picking their bikes up from the oil-soaked, vacuum-like mud of Siberian roads. The odyssey was tempered, however, by gratifying rides to quaint villages and bustling modern-day ancient cities of European countries as well as the paved-road wonders of Canada and the United States. You soon realize that you don't have to trip around the world to get inspired by these guys who did it on their BMW R1150GS Adventure motorcycles.

I recommend the Long Way Round documentary for anyone contemplating motorcycle ownership and touring if for nothing else, the chance to live vicariously through these two fellow riders on their fantastic trip. It's great story-telling, cool music, and you just might get that last bit of motivation you need to embrace motorcycling again, for the first time, or even to rekindle a current rider's sense of adventure.
