Motorcycling…
A Baby Boomer’s Second Wind.
It’s been described as “the closest thing to flying without leaving the ground”. Kevin Keath McMillan re-discovered motorcycling as he approached 50 years of age and after having been “re-org’d” out of a corporate career he had loved, and been defined by, for 24 years. Faced with the ultimate mid-life crisis, he chooses what he then considered an unusual path to reclaiming lost years of misplaced priorities. He was surprised to find others of his ilk along the way...many others. Boomers and bikes are finding one another day by day.
Starting over in motorcycling after a hiatus of many years, or deciding to ride for the first time can be intimidating but uncover, like Kevin did, the appeal---and sometimes surprises, of doing so. Riding skills are practiced in a simple parking lot. The Motorcycle Safety Course is undertaken. A cautious transition to neighborhood streets, city avenues, and state highways is braved. Every revolution of the BMW motorcycle's tires brings more comfort in the saddle. Confidence grows and translates into an ever-widening circle of day-rides, short trips, regional multi-day reconnoiters, a sprawling multi-week, multi-state distance-"training ride", and ultimately a memorable, moto-odyssey from his home in the central U.S. to the west coast, traveling by ferry to the Alaskan shoreline and motorcycling past the arctic circle to some of the 49th state's northernmost reaches, then tackling the vast expanse of Canada, cascading through the American heartland until striking the southernmost tip of the United States in Key West, Florida.
His photographs lead to a voyeurism of escapades great and small with unexpected reflections upon himself, his Native American heritage, and an appreciation of this fantastic gift we call Life. Whether it’s feeling the wind rush past on the open road to unknown destinations or simply gliding around the neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon, discover the sense of freedom you grant yourself upon entering the world of---Land Flight.
